The Brockville Braves have split their first two games of 2022.
After winning 5-2 in Cornwall Thursday night, the Jr. A Braves were defeated 4-2 by Kemptville at the Memorial Centre on Friday night. The win moves the 73’s to within two points of Brockville, which remains third overall in the 12-team Central Canada Hockey League.
Braves defenceman Trent Ledrew’s first goal of the season opened the scoring at 7:49 of the first period, but Patrick Larkin responded for Kemptville 17 seconds later.
Ryan Bonfield restored Brockville’s lead on a power play at 7:04 of the second period. It was his 17th goal of the year. The 73’s tied the game on a power-play goal by Johnny Howie at 14:49.
Brock Krulicki gave the visitors a 3-2 lead at 7:05 of the third, and Devon Savignac added an insurance marker by scoring an empty-netter with about 20 seconds to play in regulation.
Larkin, Ledrew and Krulicki were named first, second and third stars respectively.
Kemptville outshot Brockville 25-21. Tyler Laureault picked up the win in net for the 73’s. Brandon Abbott was between the pipes for the Braves.
A modest crowd of 305 was on hand. It was Brockville’s first game at the Memorial Centre since Dec. 10.
The Braves (19-9-0-2) will play on the road in Pembroke Sunday night. The Lumber Kings are one point ahead of the Braves and have two games in hand.
Kemptville (17-8-2-2) is at Navan on Sunday afternoon.
Bonfield now has 11 goals in 14 games with the Braves since being traded from Carleton Place in mid-autumn.
