Braves win first two CCHL showcase games – Recorder & Times

The Brockville Braves will try to make it four wins in five days on Monday.

The Jr. A team defeated the Smiths Falls Bears 4-1 at the CCHL Fall Showcase in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon. All 12 teams in the league see action on Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving Monday.

Smiths Falls opened the scoring on Cory Liu’s power-play goal at 4:26 of the first period. Matthew Donovan’s second of the season tied the game 55 seconds before intermission.

Brockville’s Owen Rainey scored what would prove to be the game-winner at 1:32 of the second period. Liam Goreski made it 3-1 for the Braves at 7:24, and Luke Tchor added an empty-netter with about seven seconds left in regulation. It was his fourth goal of the year.

Brockville outshot Smiths Falls 40-34. Brandon Abbott made 33 saves in net for the Braves. Rainey, Abbott and Liu were named first, second and third stars respectively.

Brockville (5-2) went on to defeat Rockland 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Braves wrap up the showcase by playing Hawkesbury early Monday afternoon.

The Braves edged the Colts 2-1 in a shootout in Cornwall on Thursday night.
