There were enough shots, but goals were at a premium.

The Nationals edged the Brockville Braves 2-1 in Rockland on Wednesday night. The win enabled the Nationals to hop over the Braves and into seventh place in the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL).

The home-and-home rematch slated for the Brockville Memorial Centre on Friday night was postponed on Wednesday in anticipation of a major winter storm and poor driving conditions.

Tim Cousineau gave the home team the lead late in the first period on Wednesday. The Braves drew even late in the second on a power-play goal by Lucas Culhane; it was his 13th goal of the season.

Rockland captain Yanic Crete scored the game-winning short-handed goal at 12:55 of the third. Brockville pulled goalie Sami Molu late in regulation but was unable to score the equalizer with the extra skater.

The Braves outshot the Nationals 40-32. Haydn Gould made 39 saves in net for Rockland.

Crete, Gould and Culhane were named first, second and third stars respectively.

Brockville’s record at the Christmas break is 14-14-1. The eighth-place Braves’ first game of 2023 is at home against Nepean on Friday, Jan. 6.

The top eight teams at the end of the regular season advance to the CCHL playoffs slated to open in early March.
