The Brockville Braves defeated the Raiders 6-4 in Nepean on Wednesday night. It was the Jr. A Braves’ second game of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL) regular season; Brockville had won its home-opener against Carleton Place last Friday by that same score.
It was also the second game in a row that Braves forward Peter Legostaev had two goals and was named first star.
On Wednesday, he opened the scoring on a power play at 18:07 of the first period. Tyler Smith evened the score for Nepean 18 seconds into the second period, but Legostaev restored Brockville’s lead a mere 10 seconds later.
The Braves were assessed two minor penalties a bit later in the middle frame, and the Raiders took advantage of the opportunities. Power-play goals from Nick Larkin and Tristan Konobelj gave the home team a 3-2 lead.
Brockville captain Kayden Buller tied the game at 18:06 of the second; it was his second goal of the young season. The Braves went ahead 4-3 early in the third on Volodymyr Karpachov’s second goal of the year.
Luka Benoit scored for Nepean at 13:00. The game-winner came from Jesse Lumsden at 17:33, just as the Braves had finished killing off a penalty.
The Raiders’ net was empty when play resumed, and Hunter Robitaille scored with just over a minute and a half to go in regulation to pad the visitors’ lead.
Brockville had a 44-43 edge in shots on the night. Nate Galbraith picked up the win in net; Jack Gedraitis was in goal for Nepean, which is now 1-2.
Larkin and Karpachov were named second snd third stars respectively.
The Braves open a home-and-home with the Lumber Kings on Friday night; puck drops at 7:30. Pembroke, which is 1-1, will host the rematch Sunday night.
Also on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Smiths Falls Bears (1-0-1) will host the Kemptville 73’s (0-2). Tyson Parker of the Bears racked up nine points in his first two games of the season to lead the league in scoring and was named the CCHL First Star of opening week.
Teammate Carter Beauchesne, a rookie who picked up seven points, received the third-star honour. Cornwall Colts goalie Colton Rheaume, who went 3-0 to start the season, was named second star. Brockville, Smiths Falls, Cornwall and Rockland were the four CCHL squads tabbed earlier this week as “teams to watch” by the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) ahead of its first weekly national Top 20 list of the new season.
Thirty teams in the CJHL’s nine member leagues were included on the watch list.
