Braves win division – face Pembroke in CCHL playoffs – R&T

They took care of business, even if they needed an extra 19 seconds to do so.

The Brockville Braves won the CCHL’s Robinson Division at home Friday night in their final game of the regular season. Luke Tchor’s second goal of the game gave the Jr. A Braves a 5-4 victory early in the overtime period.

With Renfrew also winning Friday night, the extra point gave Brockville the division title and the third seed in the CCHL playoffs. The Braves will take on the six seed Pembroke Lumber Kings in the opening round. Game one is in Brockville Tuesday night at 7.

Colin Stacey’s 11th goal of the season gave Brockville the lead about six minutes into the first period at the Memorial Centre Friday. Aidan Puley tied the game at 14:34, but Tchor’s first of the night and 21st of the year restored the Braves’ lead on a power play at 18:40.

Alec Lovisek made it 2-2 at 7:42 of the second. Brockville captain Thomas Haynes gave the Braves the lead again 43 seconds before intermission’ it was his fourth goal of the season. Ryan Bonfield scored his 33rd goal of the year at 2:07 of the third to make it 4-2 for the Braves.

Calum Chau cut the lead in half at 16:11, and then Navan’s Danyk Drouin scored the equalizer on a six-on-four with about 21 seconds left in regulation.

The Grads outshot the Braves 40-26. Sami Molu made 36 saves for Brockville. Carter Garvie was in net for Navan.

Tchor, Haynes and Chau were named first, second and third stars respectively.

Brockville finished the regular season at 36-17-0-2, one point ahead of Renfrew. The Wolves will take on Kemptville to open the playoffs.

By picking up one point, the Grads clinched a playoff berth with one game to go before the post-season. Navan is in seventh overall, two points up on Smiths Falls.

The Bears defeated Nepean 6-3 Friday night but did not clinch a playoff berth. Smiths Falls leads Rockland by one point for eighth overall. The Bears close out the regular season at home against two seed Hawkesbury on Sunday afternoon. Rockland’s final game is against top-seeded Ottawa on Saturday afternoon.
