Braves fall to Nationals 4-2 – Recorder & Times

It was another up-and-down weekend for the Brockville Braves.

After defeating Kanata 5-1 at home on Friday night, the Braves travelled to Rockland and lost to the Nationals 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The game was tied 2-2 early in the third period when Rockland captain Matthew Vermaeten scored his second of the game about five minutes into the third frame and then made it a hat trick with an empty-netter with 38 seconds left in regulation.

The Nationals had jumped out to an early lead. Brockville’s Konnor MacCormick tied the game at 14:24 of the first period; it was his second goal of the season. Vermaeten scored his first goal of the afternoon with 18 seconds to play in the second to restore Rockland’s lead.

Sam Allison’s fourth goal of the year drew the Braves even 64 seconds into the third period.

Rockland edged Brockville 29-28 in shots. Simon Harkness took the loss in net for the Braves. MacCormick was named third star; Vermaeten and teammate Cameron Scrivens were first and second stars respectively.

Brockville (4-3-2) is in fourth place in the Robinson Division standings. Carleton Place leads the division and the CCHL; the Canadians have 10 wins in their first 11 games.

The Braves will be in Hawkesbury Tuesday night. Brockville will host Smiths Falls at the Memorial Centre on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
